Exactly 250 years ago, during the reign of Empress Catherine II, a decree was adopted on the improvement of the main roads of Russia and the replacement of wooden milestones with stone ones.

The custom of marking large roads by milestones was formed much earlier, in the 16th century, even before the reign of Peter I. Sir Peter Alekseevich himself distinguished himself not only by cutting the beards of boyars, but also by increasing road construction in the country, and, accordingly, the number of wooden milestones. . After the victory in the Northern War, appreciating the indisputable advantages of the Swedish roads, the first all-Russian emperor commanded: "Establish the roads in the same way as in Sweden." And in 1764, under Catherine II, the Commission on the stone structure of St. Petersburg and Moscow replaced wooden structures with granite, lined with colored marble. New pillars were designed either by architect Antonio Rinaldi, or Jean-Baptiste Wallen-Delamot - historians have not yet been able to establish the authorship of the document.
Stone construction in Russia has an extremely difficult history, reflected not only in the preserved milestones and Catherine’s miles, but, of course, in the architectural complexes of Russian cities, as well as the decoration of palaces and estates. According to many experts, the preserved love for the use of marble, granite, products made of natural stone and other building materials is explained by the noble appearance of the resulting interiors. In addition, nature has no repetitions: the stairs and the fireplace made of marble or onyx will be unique. For example, the legendary pink ovoid Finnish granite, which served as the material for the Alexander Column in St. Petersburg, is still mined in Finland and is in demand all over the world due to its bizarre and unusual texture.

As it became known to the editors of uznayvse.ru, today in the northern capital the project of another monumental monument, traditionally decorated with granite, was approved. The working group agreed with some remarks the project of the sculptural composition on the new Arch of Victory, which will be erected in Krasnoselsky district of the city for the celebration of Victory Day in 2015.
