Mechnikov Academy: History
The first educational institutions dealing withtraining of medical professionals, appeared in Russia in the middle of the 18th century. A century later, there was a need to create a special institute where doctors could improve their knowledge and be able to apply the latest achievements in medical science in practice. This idea was voiced by N. Pirogov and E. Eikhvald and found strong support from the Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna Romanova. This "scientist of our family," as the father-in-law named Emperor Paul the First, procured for the new educational institution a piece of land located on the Preobrazhensky Platz and, together with other benefactors, financed the construction of the building of the clinical hospital.
Another important milestone in the history of the Academy -the opening in 1907 of the psycho-neurological institute, at the origins of which the academician V. Bekhterev stood. In 1920, the medical faculty of this university was transformed into the Institute of Medical Knowledge, and after repeated reorganization and renaming in June 1994, the institute became known as the St. Petersburg Medical Academy. Mechnikov. In parallel, the Institute for Advanced Studies (GIDUV) was developing, where Soviet doctors from time to time were required to take retraining courses. A number of scientific research institutes and laboratories operate in the SZGMU, including the institutes of medical mycology, endocrinology, cellular technologies, innovative technologies, etc. There are 8 faculties: medical, medico-prophylactic, pediatric, dental, surgical, therapeutic, medico-biological and faculty of nursing education . There are also 4 dissertational councils in the Mechnikov Medical Academy that assign degrees in such specialties as epidemiology, hygiene, infectious diseases, microbiology, internal diseases, social hygiene and healthcare organization. Since 1947 foreign students have been studying at the university. Over the past years, the Academy has graduated about two thousand doctors from 60 states located in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Oceania and Latin America. At the moment more than 900 students from 42 countries of the world study at the faculty for foreign citizens, which undoubtedly testifies to the high quality of teaching in SZGMU.
The clinical base of SZGMU is the well-knownclinical hospital of Peter the Great. Today, almost 1,300 patients are treated at the university's clinics, which are serviced by more than 1,500 medical workers. Among the staff there are two corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, 111 doctors of science and professors and over two hundred candidates of medical sciences. Moreover, a significant part of the medical staff has repeatedly been retrained in well-known institutions in Europe and the United States. In the clinics of the Mechnikov Academy, they successfully cope with pathology of the circulatory, respiratory and digestive organs, endocrine and urinary systems, as well as disorders of the musculoskeletal system.
St. Petersburg Mechnikov Academy has its ownpublishing house. Monthly, the newspaper "Vestnik SZGMU" and a number of scientific journals, for example, "Russian Family Physician", "Efferent Therapy", etc., are published, most of which are on the list of VAK.
