What is the size of the uterus?

Many women want to know what size of the uterus is considered normal in a given situation? Under the situation, basically, refers to the normal generally accepted size and during pregnancy, depending on the period.

What sizes are considered normal

In women who have not given birth, the normal dimensions of the uterus have the following parameters: width - 2.9, thickness - 2.6, length - 2.9. The unit of measure is centimeter. Here we are talking about the time after puberty of a woman, since in adolescent girls these indicators are somewhat different during puberty.

After abortions, which, of course, it is not advisable to do, the uterus assumes the following dimensions: width - 3.1, thickness - 2, 7, length - 3.1.

After the birth of the first child, the standards are already somewhat different: width - 3.3, thickness - 2.8, length - 3.4. This is the size of the uterus of a mature woman.

After the second birth, a sharp jump in the increase does not occur, and the uterus remains approximately in the following dimensions: width - 3.4, thickness - 3.0, length - 3.7.

In addition, it is worthwhile to dwell on how the uterus changes when hormonal changes begin in the body.During postmenopausal women (from one to five years), these figures become the same as those of a nulliparous woman: width - 2.7, thickness - 2.4, length - 2.9. But already after the sixth year they decrease: width - 2.3, thickness - 2.1, length - 2.4.

Of course, these figures are average, that is, approximate. They may have different options for different women. This may depend on its size, transferred gynecological or sexually transmitted diseases.

Uterus size during pregnancy

It is worth to stay in more detail. It must be borne in mind that statistics reflecting this important period are not available. The fact is that the body of each woman is unique in its own way, and each pregnancy proceeds differently.

More important here is the change in the shape of the uterus. In the seventh week after fertilization, the uterus changes its shape - from the pear-shaped it becomes spherical. After 8 weeks, she sticks out in some direction and loses symmetry. After the tenth week, she again takes the form of a ball.

The approximate size of the uterus by week of pregnancy:

  • 5 week - becomes the size of a chicken egg;
  • Week 9 - reaches the size of a goose egg;
  • Week 13 - reaches the size of a good boxer's fist;
  • Week 17 - womb becomes 6 cm below the bottom of the uterus;
  • Week 21 - the uterus pulls out the abdomen, and the womb is 12 cm below the bottom of the uterus;
  • Week 25 - the bottom of the uterus is at the navel, and the bosom is already 24 cm lower;
  • Week 29 - the uterus is 4 cm above the navel and 4 cm below the uterus by 28 cm;
  • Week 33 - it is already 32 cm higher than the bosom, and the belly at the level of the navel has a circumference of at least 85 cm;
  • 37 week - the bottom of the uterus approached the ribs in the xiphoid process, the abdominal circumference increased by another 5 cm;
  • Week 41 - the bottom of the uterus began to fall, it is 32 cm higher than the bosom.

What size should the uterus be during pregnancy?

The uterus increases in size throughout pregnancy. In its first weeks, it resembles a pear in its shape. After the 9th week of pregnancy, it acquires a rounded shape and increases in size almost 3 times. Throughout the second half of pregnancy, the rounded shape is preserved, and with the beginning of the third trimester, the shape of the egg is acquired.

The height of the bottom of the uterus (the distance from the upper part of the uterus to the upper edge of the pubic symphysis) in centimeters corresponds to the approximate gestational age expressed in weeks.

Before the gestation period, the weight of the uterus varies from 50 g to 100 g. At the end of this period (pregnancy), its weight reaches 1000 g, that is, it increases by 20 times. The volume of its internal cavity for the same period is increased by 500 times.

The uterine smooth muscle fiber becomes 5 times thicker and 10 times longer. Big changes are taking place in the vascular network, as the pregnant uterus is on a par with important organs such as the brain, liver, and heart, according to the degree of oxygen provision.
